Seven of the nine schools in the Jackson County School System eligible for the Georgia Department of Education’s Academic Achievement Awards Program are being recognized as Title I Reward Schools.
The annual program honors and rewards K-12 Title I schools and school districts for significant progress in improving student achievement and/or making significant progress in closing the achievement gaps.
West Jackson Middle School and North Jackson and East Jackson elementary schools were recognized as Highest-Performing Reward Schools, staking their claim to a place among the highest five percent of the Title I schools in the state.
West Jackson, South Jackson and Benton elementary schools and East Jackson Middle School earned honors as High-Progress Reward Schools, placing them among the highest 10 percent of the Title I schools in the state.
“We are thrilled with this news,” said Dr. April Howard, JCSS superintendent. “Our staff works hard every day to make sure all our students have the opportunity to succeed, and announcements like this encourage us in that effort.”
The recognition marked the fifth consecutive rating as a highest-performing school for EJES and the fourth consecutive rating for WJMS. It was the fourth time NJES was honored as highest-performing since 2013; in FY 16 the school was among those earning high-progress honors.
WJES and SJES made their second consecutive appearances on the high-progress roll. Benton, which closed in 2017, sending its students to EJES and SJES, was a highest-performing school in FY16 and FY14.
Title I schools are those in which children from low-income families make up at least 40 percent of enrollment. In Jackson County, only Gum Springs Elementary School and Jackson County Comprehensive High School did not reach that percentage point for the 2016-17 school year.
According to information from the state DOE, calculations to identify Highest Performing schools are based on the achievement of the “all students” group in terms of proficiency on the statewide assessments for differentiated recognition, accountability, and support system.
State assessment data are used for calculating content mastery indicators on the state’s College and Career Ready Performance Index. The CCRPI is a school improvement, accountability and communication platform that promotes college and career readiness for Georgia public school students.
For each subject assessment, student performance that meets or exceeds expectations is calculated, and points are awarded based on the indicator’s “meets-and-exceeds rate.” The content mastery category performance, a decimal value, represents an aggregate meets-and-exceeds rate for all subject assessments.
For the High Progress schools, student growth percentiles are used to calculate progress on the CCRPI. The progress component of the CCRPI represents 25 points of the 100-point total. The percent demonstrating typical/high growth is multiplied by 25 points to derive the points earned for progress.
